Right now, I have a few bettas, only one is in a five gal tank, the problem is that the betta that is in the 5 gal tank always swims against the y axis of the tank (Some times the x-axis) first i thought it was the betta's falut, so i changed the betta, but the other one does the same thing, i think that they are seeing their image but not clearly (I also keep a baby guppie in the same tank, but she never swims against the glass), I really want my betta to stop so i need some advice to keep him in the five gal tank AND not to swim against the glass all the time!

Good luck! LOL Once a fish has a pattern of activity like that it's very difficult to change it. They may be seeing their reflection, that's as good of a theory as any certainly. Anything you up on the outside of the glass (like a background) will probably only make it more reflective. If possible, allow some algae to grow on that side glass. That would surely stop any reflection that's getting his attention. Breaking up the path with plastic plants may also work, worth a try.

you can buy coverings to go around the back and sides of the tank from most pet shops, they supplt different pictures for you to choose from or you could just use a coloured paper, the glass becomes a mirror to the fish if all the sides are open to light so by covering the sides and back you close the mirror effect which reduces the stress of the fish so they stop doing that and it also gives the tank a great affect

If the tank is waiting, and your betta is already interior the cup, waiting for the flow, I say pour the cup quickly into the recent tank. it fairly is been very useful for me. Incase something is going incorrect, grab a towel, or your palms and without postpone place him back in his tank. Bettas can certainly final out of water for upto 5 minutes.

1. can they see their own reflection or another betta on that side of the tank? if so, obstruct the view!

2. are they only doing this when you're near the tank or do they do it when you're away from the tank on the otherside of the room as well?
all my bettas pace the glass when i'm about and near by, they want their damn food! greedy lil buggers.

Try putting a decorative object (like tall fake seaweed) in the corner to block the reflection. Or buy one of the cheap backgrounds for tanks and wrap it around the side. : )

Or, if you have a female Betta, put her in the problem tank. Females aren't nearly as aggressive and shouldn't attack the tank like the males.

bettas prefer a smaller tank-5 gallons might be too big for the fish you have. try putting plants or medium sized rocks to take up some space

I don't know how you would do that. I guess just let them do it. It's not really hurting them. I keep my betta in a small little glass bowl. Be careful though. They do like to commit suicide and I am not kidding. So always have a lid of some sort on them.
