The house we just bought has a counter stove top with 2 electric burners and a grill on it. I don't believe these people ever cleaned up after cooking. (The oven is nasty also). Any suggestions on how to clean this stove top with out scratching the stainless steal?

Zep makes a stainless steel cleaner that is a foam spray on application. You can get it at Home Depot. For really burned on food stains, you can use Barkeeper's Friend which is a cleanser made for use on stainless steel and it won't scratch the surface. I like the Zep because it leaves a nice shine and a protective coating that makes it easy to clean the stainless the next time some food or grease gets on it. For your nasty oven, you can use the Easy Off Fume Free foam cleaner.

Go borrow a friend's self-cleaning oven (barbeque grills also get treated this way). Familiarize yourself with the oven cleaning section of your supermarket: there are lots of nasty products designed for this dirtiest of dirty jobs.

Unless you can get Mike Rowe to drop over with a film crew, it's often easier to just go out and buy a new stove.

Use any acid based metal cleaner. In India there is one "Ease (your) Bang" which cleans practically anything from any surface
