I tend to read the newspaper more often then I used to because it allows a better view on the world, from the perspective of the writers and the people who have contributed to it. Most of the time, a newspaper has a "comments" section or letters from readers who reply to something that has been published days ago, which allows an insight in how these people think about certain events that took place around them. Other then that, the information value is gold and could even be used years after you originally read it. However, after a while, you start to see constants in articles, since you can't keep repeating the same subject over and over without falling into repetition. When you reach that point, it's better to leave a newspaper behind for a while and focus on other things, so the saturation levels decrease until you start noticing again that you know too little about what is happening around you and in the entire world. Then you can start picking up the paper again, reading it from your own view and perspective, and that from others.

I read the news as it is pertinent to my existence and because it feeds my interests and curiosity about what is going on in the world around me. I don't feel as though reading the news "improves my big thinking" (I read loads of sci fi or hang out around here for that!).

I've been an attorney for 18 years and have read the newspaper daily since the age of ten. It dosen't really help with the practice of law but I have intellectual curiosity about what is happening in my community and the world around me.
