This is quite a difficult question. I will give you my opinion but I don't think there's 1 right answer.

I think some people dislike Linux because it sometimes lacks support for hardware (especially with notebooks). I have got Linux and I think its great but I've spend hours to get my computer fully operationel (wifi,3d-graphics,all kind of school programs). But beware you can't blame the linux-programmers, the problem is that a lot of companies don't share the information for making their hardware work (the information for writing a driver). But these companies just produce a driver for windows but not for linux (because the popularity of windows nowadays is a lot greater than linux).

The major problem is that you need some skills to get linux operational and there is software wich won't work on linux. But once the system works it will be better than a windowsenvironment. (In my opinion).

it's possible that Microsoft will lose domination but that will take some years. When that happens I would be quite happy. This is because (in my opinion) Microsoft is one big scam. If you take a look at vista you might understand what I mean. It costs loads of money and the extra's you get are not super. And it asks a lot from your computer.

If there linux haven't got the problems with driver support and restricted formats(see below) than windows wouldn't stand a chance. If linux starts growing I think it would grow bigger than windows. From the moment linux has more users companies would give more support to linux and linux loses its driver-support-problems.

last I will explain the restricted formats problem. I will do this with an exemple:
e.g. mp3
mp3 is not a free format. so If linux wants to include mp3-support in their distribution the linux-distributors will have the pay an amount of money for each time someone download that linux-distribution. That's why some popular formats are not included in linux by default. But you can download solutions for those problems once you have installed linux! there are also free formats e.g: .ogg for more information http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogg

Linux is for the computer savy people. windows is so prevelant that it will never go away and all the other software out there runs in windows but not much for linux. Linux is so much better than it use to be and way less expensive that microsoft. with Vist you pay 250 and then you need to pay another couple hundred for an office suite
linux is 50 to 90 for the edition with after markes software and comes with an office suite. mine comes with open office.
I run a dual boot system and I'm in linux 85% of the time.

most people run windows because thats what their computer came with

I think now we will start to see the slow decline of Windows sales, though it will have the majority of market share for many years. I think more and more people are losing their ignorance of alternatives, and more people that are inclined to try something different are trying Linux. It is usually not harder then Windows to use, it just has some set backs because manufacturers aren't preinstalling it on computers yet. I think we will start to see surprising perception change of the masses when Linux desktop useage starts to near 10% which I'm sure we will see in 5 years, well at least in developing countrys.

1. People don't like linux because people like to keep things simple. With vista, it's very simple, even though it costs a bit more money than usual.

2. with Vista out, definately. you can't do much with your computer, everything is so simple. some people like doing things the hard way (like back in 2000 and XP) and happen to like the fact that there shouldn't have to be 2 GB of memory and a video/graphics card in the computer in order for it to run right. I have 1 GB, no video/graphics card and XP, and it runs perfectly.

also, in linux, you can do much more than in windows.

for the people that like simple stuff, microsoft wins by a mile. for people who like to do more, definately linux (or older versions of windows)

IMHO, Vista isn't good, and will need a service pack or two for things to get rolling. it might even be longer, or it might not even catch on at all.

They might dislike Linux because it is generally more difficult to install and configure, but that's fading away too (Ubuntu)

Not in the near future
