Hello,

(ANS) OK!! so you now have a broadband enabled phoneline with ADSL. So in order to connect to the internet you need a connection device, there is the following choice:-

a) an ADSL Modem (many come as a USB plug & play, plug it in and install the software drivers and away you go, well almost?!!)

b) a wired in router. A router can be setup either using ADSL or the router can be connected to a traditional exsisting ethernet based network. Ethernet setup's tend to be more relevant to business's not home users generally

c) A wireless router

d) combo i.e. wireless ADSL modem router. Yes! its abit confusing as it combined a wireless device and a router which also has a modem builtin for emergencies.

**Check IT suppliers for prices as the cost of routers, modems & wirelss routers has come down alot in recent times. Prices vary from £40 to the £200-£300 price range. I suggest you purchase a good quality modem router in the mid price range, this tends to ensure the device is likely to last longer and you will gain more benefit from it.

Your best bet would be to buy a modem router. It is unlikely that you will get a top router with a usb connection. I searched and searched for what I needed and eventually took the advice of someone else and bought a netgear dg834G. This is a wireless modem router and can handle speeds of up to 54 mbps. It cost me £35 brand new off ebay. Argos or Ebuyer are about cheapest. I can definately recommend the router and would buy netgear over any other brand.

The answer is yes and no

no you don't need one as you can get a router without an modem and connect your modem to it
or
buy yourself a router with a modem in it - my personal choice, as it cuts down the number of boxes and wires/power etc.
