I am considering building a robot guided by Java programs, but have no clue where to start! Where do I get the Java programming language? Where can I get started programming in Java?

In most cases you get the programming software from the manufacturer of the microcontroller....

Not all microcontrollers can be programmed in JAVA as there may not be a compilier available for them. So your choice of language is driving your uC selection.

I would recommend the Javelin Basic Stamp by parallax which is programmed in a subset of JAVA. Parallax Basic Stamps are wonderful entry level uC's as there is wide support and numerous tutorials for them...
