They're popular, but some in the medical profession believe they're not safe. Why? Because you are sending radio waves to "map" the baby in utero - and a 3D/4D ultrasound uses much stronger waves than a regular ultrasound.
Medical professionals do not think that such a risk of extra sonar is necessary, and certainly not for a "pretty picture." The fact of the matter is that the technology is still very new, and long-term risks are unknown, so a medical professional might frown on extra risk.
That being said, they are certainly popular.

3D ultrasounds have become more of a "fad" and a keepsake ornament and there are places where they are done by poorly trained individuals. Some doctors believe that ultrasounds should only be done if there is a medical need for them, so perhaps she agrees. As long as you are sure that the place your ultrasound will be done is safe (they shouldn't have the device against you for more than 30 minutes at a time), then there is no need to worry. If it were truly dangerous, I'm sure your midwife would have spoken up right away! Congrats and good luck!

I had two 3-D ultrasounds done, the technician assured me it is perfectly safe for the baby. The thing is I really think the 3-D ultrasound effects the baby, not harming it or anything, but when I got mine done the baby seemed angry and kept kicking where the technician had the stick on me. It gives of high frequency waves. I think you should get one done if you want, not too many though, I am having no more. I think a great time to have one done the earliest 25 and 28 weeks.

Some people think that you shouldn't have ultrasounds at all, not even the regular, routine ones. Perhaps she feels this way about the 3-D ones.
They are safe, but some people say that doing too many can be harmful, because they've not really done studies on long-term effects of 'excessive' use. Remember when everyone was all nuts because they were saying that Tom Cruise bought an ultrasound machine so they could look at baby Suri whenever they wanted? Same principle.
My cousin is going to have the 3D ultrasound on Friday, at the reccomendation of her doctors. They want to get a better look at the faces of her twin boys, who may both have a hare lip or cleft palate. If they thought it was unsafe, they wouldn't have her do it.

Supposedly they haven't completely researched the long-term effects. Try not to worry about it. I would ask the midwife directly why she seemed disapproving. Perhaps it was a misunderstanding. If you cannot agree on the courses you are taking, you may want a different midwife when the time comes..

The long-term effects of ultrasound are still unknown. I did not want to find out the hard way. I never had ultrasound or doptone or the electronic fetal monitor with my pregnancies.
They did teach in prenatal class that ultrasound is known to cause deafness in animals.

My midwife acctually ordered a 3d for me. As far as I knew they were completely safe. As long as you get them done by a professional and not these places in the mall and stuff.

Choosing to have a midwife is kind of like going about the whole pregnancy "old-fashioned." She may think that it is unnecessary... but it is by no means, harmful. Do not worry about her "looks" or whether she doesnt care for the idea. 3d Ultrasounds are great! And plus, this is about you and your baby. Not her and her disapproving thoughts!

It is safe and fine. Some midwives don't believe you should even have ultrasounds unless absolutely necessary. Maybe she is old school, I would just ignore it or find another midwife.

My doctor was kind of the same way....so I asked why. He just thinks the are an overrated "fad" and that they are not necessary. There is nothing harmful about it, so its completely up to you if you want to put out the money for it. I did it and came out completely satisfied - I was also kind of doing it as a second opinion on gender determination.
