I did a similar thing and it really depends on how long you're going for and for what purpose. I mainly went to go out partying and for this I would definitely suggest San Diego, Santa Barabara and Las Vegas.

LA always disappoints me, I wouldn't stay for long here maybe a trip down to Santa Monica and Venice beach, Hollywood is an absolute dump. Santa Cruz was cool and of course San Fran is an awesome city. Have fun wish I was going.

C'mon Charlie help us out here . How much time do you have to do this ? Are you a nature lover ? Any way you can drop the car off at LAX and then fly back to SFO ? Because if that is possible then the routing becomes Vegas death valley, baker, barstow ,mojave, bakersfield, visalia, sequoia NP , Fresno ,Yosemite NP , modesto , sfo , montery/carmel down the pch into san luis obisbo , santa barbara & LAX
I always prefered driving south on the pch . Driving south your passenger has nothing but cliff ocean and sky to look at.
so work with us here .

you should definitely see Yosemite National Park and the Redwood forests around San Franciso. Alternately you could skip Yosemite and drive to the coast from Las vegas, seeing death valley national park on the way and then up the pacific coast highway to sf.
