update #1
I'll try to explain each one briefly but hopefully in a way that'll make sense.
First of all, anytime a question says "a number," it's a variable, so we'll call it x. Then when it talks about another number, try to express it in terms of x (so if it says a second number is 2 more than the first, call it x+2).
1) If the first positive number is x, let's say the second is 8x. If their difference is 70, and 8x is the bigger number because x is positive, we'll say 8x-x=70. Then solve algebraically by combining like terms to get 7x=70, and then dividing by 7 to get x=10. Since it asks for the number that is 8 times greater than the other, the answer to the question is 80.
2) Again, we'll call "a certain number" x. X increased by twice 3 means x+2(3), which it says is equal to 17. So, x+6=17, and solve by subtracting 6 from both sides to get 11.
3) The numbers here are x and x+7. If the sum is 29, x+x+7=29
then: 2x+7=29
2x=22
x=11
4) Two thirds of a number will be represented as 2x/3 (x times 2/3). So, 2x/3-9=7. To get rid of the fraction, we can multiply everything by 3 to get:
2x-27=21
2x=48
x=24
5) Seven times a number will be 7x, so when you subtract the number (x) you get 7x-x, or 6x. Then, 6x=48 and x=8.

Write the MATH numbers UNDER the words
Seven times a number minus the number is 48. Find the number. The number is________
...7 X.....n - n = 48
7n - n = 48
THEN simplify your problem by combining what can be
7n - n = 48
6n = 48
THEN (the point in algebra is to get the letter alone)
THEN... whatever is beign done to teh letter (variable) you do the OPPOSITE
(so if its being +, you - OR if its being /, you X) AND YOU DO IT TO BOTH SIDES:
6n = 48
/6....../6
n...= 8
