I am from the Uk and i went to Spain once and at 2pm they all go back to bed for a few hours and then get up again at about 5pm. whats that all about .

They say it's because it's a hot country and that they can't do nothing in the mid day sun. But what about other hot countrys like Africa,India, and the rest. Why don't they take naps half way through the day too?

I think it's because they are lazy and seem to get away with it Lol
No offence just an oberservation

my parents live in spain and the reason is - it just gets too hot. Plus all the shops and bars re open again and stay open late so they dont really work less hours. Even the children come home at lunch for several hours.
Personally I'm rubbish at siestas, if i sleep in the afternoon, it takes me an hour to nod off and about 4 hours to recover from it.!
Im a proper english girl lol

Due to the fact that the Spanish tend to start work early due to the coolness of the sun, knock off during the heat of the day, then resume work in the early evening and work a few hours more, I am all in favour of copying this when on holiday in spain. The Spanish are not a lazy people, they actually work hard and put in many hours,as a frequent visitor to Spain I see this all the time!

They get up really early while it's cool and go to bed really late at night (while cool) then during midday when it's very hot they sleep for a few hours to make up for the loss of sleep at night.

It's called a Siesta and people do it all around the Mediterranean and also get up really early(cool sunrise) and go to bed late in other hot places like Africa and India for the same reasons.

Animals do it too, not just humans. Most (e.g. mammals like dogs or rabbits) are only active at around dawn and dusk and spend the hot part of the day underground, in the shade, sleeping.

I think it's an excellent idea. In Summer in hot places like Spain sometimes it gets too hot around midday to do anything anyway. I wish we had it here in UK. It's a more relaxed and healthy lifestyle(as the Sun is very damaging to skin and eyes at this time of day too). I'd love to be able to go back to bed for a few hours an midday, it'd be so refreshing.

Hope this helps you.

They are not lazy - it's you who's crazy.......I have lived in Spain for the last 8 years originally from UK. The tradition of the siesta is one that more countries should adopt, it makes for a less stressful life and increases personal efficiency.Try it before you knock it. In the end you get more out of your day and feel refreshed when those who don't take a siesta are lagging and feeling tired. I have one every day and feel worse for wear when I miss one.

I guess it's because they are happy people, and yes a bit lazy. Their life has less pressure, they have enough to eat and drink, have enough to have fun with. they aren't in debt, they are very informal with eachother, love eachother, support eachother. maybe it's because they don't have as many worries as you have. it's in their custom. they view their life differently.

yes, the reason is also the "climate". India was happy and lazy once, and was called the golden bird, but india was robbed of all it's wealth, so it had to work hard. people were materialistic, they still are, that's why they want more money, that's why they gave up sleeping too much..... life is too fast and time too precious to waste for them.

the cold countries are more advanced, becuase they were forced to struggle, develop new ways to make life easy. there was no food on the trees in winter, they had to use their minds if they wanted to survive the cold. but in a warm country, you have food all year long and good sunshine, no struggle- no problem- happy and lazy life.

It's not because of laziness! It's common in Mediterranean countries and Arabic countries also. Midday hot weather makes people feel tired so they businesses and stores usually close so that the people can get a rest.

Excuse me. It's not JUST something that happens in Spain. It also happens in Italy, Greece, Portugal, France, and also South American countries. It is NOT lazy, it's smart to do actually. It's really good for your body to give it a rest.

I wish Americans would do the same. But no....we have to be work-a-holics. It's ridiculous!

They eat the last meal of the day at about 22 hours and go to bed well past midnight. Doesn't sound lazy to me sounds like a smart way to balance things.
