I am 20 and have been trying to learn Spanish for a while now, because my boyfriend is fluent.
Something that has worked for me very well has been buying children's books in Spanish and reading them to my boyfriend. I first read the page aloud in Spanish, then I translate it and read it aloud in English. He helps me if I stumble over words and helps refine my accent. He also corrects mis-translations. It has been very helpful with learning conjugation of verbs, pronunciation, basic objects and animals, and I have been doing better than ever.
Since this has worked for me, I should think it would do wonders for a 6-year-old, because it would hold his interest, and the younger the child, the easier to learn a second language. Of course, if you don't know Spanish yourself, you will need to buy a Bilingual book, where the translations in English are written after the Spanish text. These are helpful because it can teach a young child to read in Spanish at the same time as improving his reading in English.
You can find many of these books on Amazon.com, just search "bilingual" and you can find, in addition to children's books, many guides for parents who want to help their children become bilingual.

Check your local library for Spanish language videos for your child to watch - Check your local listings for shows like Dora the Explorer and Barney - in Spanish. Start teaching him numbers 1-10 and the Spanish Alphabet - Check out Rosetta Stone - If you already speak the language - start speaking it to him.
