OK if you know nothing about punk at all, then just make sure you don't mix punk and goth.
Your best bet on looking smart with punk is to buy black and silver, black and white, or black and red, most other colours sorta make you look like you are trying too hard, especially if you are a first time punker.
If you are doing the whole rave thing you would want a whole lot of bright colours.
Basic punk style would be form fitting pants, wife beater (not a white one) spiky hair of some sort, eyeliner (even tho you are a guy) and some sort of leather bracelets or necklace. Spikes...those are good too.
