Property in the Anchorage area seems to be double that of the Orlando, FL area. There are deals to be had just like in the lower 48. You must remember that heating a house in Alaska isn't cheap.
Prior to committing yourself, you might want to check on property taxes. While Alaska does not have income or sales taxes, some of the small towns do indeed have a sales tax.
Property taxes around Anchorage can be extreme. Eighty-five percent of Alaskas revenue comes from the oil pipeline.
Fred Myers (Kroger) is the place to shop. First get their shopping card, to get the sale prices and eventually you get enough points to save on gas at their pumps.
Northern Alaska winters can be brutal. Fairbanks can have temps as low as -50. This winter Anchorage has had record snowfalls. In Alaska snow doesn't melt like in NY. Once winter arrives, above freezeing temps to melt the snow won't be back until spring.
After you establish residency you may become elegible for the dividend check the state issues to residents. Plus you will live in the most beautiful state. More sights to see than anywhere else.

Property values vary depending on where in Alaska you are. Alaska is more than twice he size of Texas. As stated previously, the Interior can be a bit cold (-70 and such); while in the lower portion of mainland Alaska, the temps are a bit milder (0-16 and such).
As far as retiring, the cost of living in Alaska isn't much different than any large metro plex (at least in the larger cities), but you had better like winter, and I mean winter. Once it arrives it is here for 6 months.
But there is no place more spectacular. The Mountains, Rivers, the wildlife; despite the sometimes brutally cold temperatures, there is something special about seeing the Northern Lights!
You might consider a summer place here. An investment you would not regret.

I could have had 40 acres for nothing after serving 19 months in the army in 1952-53. All I had to do was clear 5 acres of land a year and build a cabin on the land. My future wife said no way. She was a very smart girl then, and still is to this day. I hated the place.
