mangamaniaciam's 100% right... NEVER never ever use petrolium based lubricants on an airsoft gun (unless otherwise directed to, by the manual).
There are a number of synthetic lubricants made specifically for airsoft, which is the safest bet. Still, you can sometimes save a few dollars if you buy matching grade synthetic lubricants from the hardware store (but do so at your own risk). I've had good results with silicone lubricants made for pinball machines, and paid a lot less for it since I get it in bulk.
FYI - In general, WD-40 isn't a good general purpose lubricant. I mean, it works OK as a lubricant... But it's better suited as a penetrating oil, solvent, for water displacement or for fireballs. WD-40 drys up much quicker than 3-in-1 oil, and attracts dust particles. For general purpose lubrication, use a more viscous multi-purpose oil.

Because of the chemical make-up of the lubricants. These type of lubricants as well as some cleaners have petroleum distillates in them. These compounds CAN melt or even change the composition of the plastic air-soft markers are made of! Change them how you ask? They can make the plastic softer to the point where it literally becomes like unto rubber and is useless, or cause it to harden to the point where the plastic breaks on the first drop, shot, or even bumping it gently into your hand to load it!!! Use what the owners manual says to use and you will not have any problems.
