I think it's fine but sometimes they do it in a rude way to excude u from a convo.....What pisses me off the most is that hispanics think spanish is a hard language....I can usually tell when someone is saying negative things about other ppl or myself..that's when it's annoying and that's when I say "hey, this is America, speak english"..

Because we're more comfortable talking Spanish with a fellow Spanish speaker. As for me, it's instinctual. When I'm talking to a friend or relative I tend to switch back and forth between languages, or even talk in both languages (Spanglish). And by the way, why don't you mind your own business and stop trying to listen in on other peoples conversations? I'm sick and tired of non-Spanish speakers complaining about people speaking Spanish. I hear Asians, Middle Easterners, Europeans etc. speaking their language all the time, either at work or in other public places, and you don't see me whining about them speaking Chinese, or Japanese or what ever language they speak.

it should be obvious that the spanish peopl want to talk in thier native language because they are more comfortable with it. as well as they do not want their co workers to understand what they are saying. it is the same thing when 2 enlgish speakers who both studied spanish work in a south american country. when they talk to another person they speak english to them. theey both know spanish but they want to speak english because they are more comfortable with their home language. either that or they do not want the spanish people to understand what they are saying.

Well , it could be that they"re simply more comfortable with
Spanish than English, or if they know you don't understand
Spanish, they might be having an enjoyable conversation
about you.
I just thought I'd put into words what you obviously felt the need
to leave out!

Likely, they use spanish because it's the language they're more familiar with, and they prefer it. It could also be that they are trying to become more familiar with the language, and so they want to practice as much as possible. If they talk in spanish often to each other, it may be because they don't know very many people who know fluent spanish, and so they use the language to talk with each other either for practice, or because they don't want their spanish to get rusty, or because they enjoy the chance to converse in their original native language. My mother is Puerto Rican, and though she (and her sisters) are perfectly fluent in english, she enjoys the chance to talk in spanish for many of the reasons that I've mentioned...she doesn't get to talk to her relatives much, and she doesn't know anybody living in our state that knows spanish, so she enjoys the rare chance to speak in the language she grew up with.
Think about it - if you traveled to another country and met another American, even if you both knew that native language, you would probably want to talk in english because it feels more comfortable, and because you don't get to often.
Either way, chances are they just talk in spanish because they prefer to. I seriously doubt they do it to keep secrets from you or other workers, or anything like that.

If Spanish is their first language, they may be more comfortable speaking it to each other. Otherwise, if they're studying Spanish, they may be practicing or just showing off. Or they don't want you to know what they are saying. In any case, I wouldn't read too much into it.

It is easier to talk in their mother tongue. Some words truly don't translate, so to be comfortable and totally understood , this is how they will converse with each other.
