What sort of proof is available for this? Wikipedia says it is stored on the actual chip, but cites no sources.

This may be mainly a UK question, although I imagine many countries use the 'chip and PIN' format. I am not refering to the magnetic strip on cards.

If it uses Smart Cards, such as the US Military has went to, then yes, it is stored on the chip. (Most non-mag strip cards use that type). It is also simular to the sim chip in a cell phone- the pins are coded into the smartcard chip on it...

I don't know if there's some proof but I think ist actually on the card.
I know a proof that it is on some cards. I know it is on a belgium bank card from dexia. Because theyve devellopped a internet banking system where you only have to know your PIN. You have to put your card in a READER looks like a little calculator not much bigger than your bank card. The reader is not connected to the internet nor the computer. You have put your card in the reader enter a code you get from the internetbankingservice than it ask your pincode and if your pin is correct it will return an code you have to submit on the internetbankingservice and then you're in. So the Reader can only check your pincode if its on the card!

It relies upon. the shop I paintings in demands the cardboard for use via the chip and pin technique. in case you attempt to swipe it, it asks you to insert the cardboard quite. in spite of the undeniable fact that, if the chip is broken/grimy/unreadable, it is going to ask to swipe the cardboard quite. in spite of the undeniable fact that, there is often an option to key the cardboard in and sign for it quite, in spite of the certainty that i'd think of there would could be good clarification for this to be completed.
