the fuzz on the ball allows the ball to spin. The way you brush the ball also dictates the spin. Slice is usually hit with a sort of sidespin ( at a high caliber). Topspin is spin that is generated by a low to high motion. Drop shots use a huge amount of backspin that is achieved by chopping down on the ball with the strings.

Hitting the ball with your racquet slightly tilted and adding power to it will create a fast topspin. Hitting the ball with a slice will make the ball spin faster and at the same time, bounce back a bit, so it's harder for the opponent to hit the ball.

If they didn't touch the ball it is your point. This is the only situation it tennis where it is legal for your opponent to reach across the net to hit the ball. I the ball is traveling to you, you may not cross the plane of the net to hit the ball. I the ball is traveling away from you, you may break the plane of the net to hit the ball. You hit a one in a million shot!
