I have a Singer 401A. I know that's an old machine but it has never been used and I have never had a problem with it before. But now the needle goes down and won't pick up the bottom stitch or something because when I pull the fabric out from underneath the foot, the bottom stitch isn't tight and its all loopy. Only sewers please I am very tired of people posting dumb comments.

Everything Tatsinda said but also try a new needle. If you're needle is old, damaged or in backwards it won't feed the thread into the correct space to catch the bobbin thread. Is it possible that little hands may have "helped" with the tensions? Sometimes that can cause problems. Other than that it might be worth it to take it in to a repair shop depending on how expensive they run in your area.

Whenever I have issues with tension or threading, I first make sure I've got the machine threaded correctly, and the bobbin threaded correctly. I change needles at the beginning of each project, so if you haven't changed your needle, that could be causing a problem as well. You could also try really cleaning under your bobbin case, take it out and really go over it good. You'd be surprized how much lint can get gummed up in there, and it will affect your tension big time. If you've done all this, and are still having problems, I'd say it's time to take the machine into be serviced, especially if it's been awhile since you've had it cleaned and lubricated. Since you're having problems, take in a sewing sample--this is one area in which a picture is DEFINITELY worth a thousand words, because the technician can see for him/herself what's actually going on. Good luck!

There isn't much I can tell you without being there to actually look at it. Take the bobbin out and see what's going on. Thread a new bobbin if you need to. Make sure the bobbin is seated properly inside the machine. Make sure everything is lint free, and properly oiled. Maybe you have the bobbin spool in backwards or not threaded properly?

I am guessing your timing belt is worn. You can either take it in to get repaired, or you can call the "sewvac doctor's" tech line and they will walk you through how to repair it yourself. (i call whenever my machine gets moody)

732-335-8902 between 4pm and 6pm EDT every weekeday but Thursdays

they'll want you to be near your machine when you call. (you usually have to look on the bottom for numbers and such)

good luck!
