1 1/2 Cups Flour
1/2 Cup Salt
Cold Water
Food Dye
What to do:
Mix flour and salt in a bowl and add cold water a little at a time to form a rough dough. Do not make it runny or sticky.
Mix in food dye if you want to make a coloured dough.
Kneed the dough until it is smooth.
Leave in an airtight container for at least an hour or until you are ready to use it.
Make your model - why not see our suggestions below? Once your model is finished:
Place the finished model in the centre of your microwave.
Cook it at low power at first and check it regularly.
Bake until it is hard, checking every 10 seconds.
Let it cool for at least 20 minutes.

Stuff to use
4 cups of plain flour
4 cups of water
2 cups salt
4 tbsp of cooking oil
Food coloring (optional), Kool-Aid, or Jello powder/jelly crystals (use different flavors for different colors and aromas)
1 tblsp. cream of tartar (optional) for each cup of flour (this stops the dough cracking and makes it stretchable)
What To Do
Gather the necessary ingredients and mix the dry ingredients together.
Add food coloring to the water. This optional step will create colored play dough.
Consider adding other fun ingredients to change the texture or appearance of the dough (such as desiccated coconut, or cocoa powder). You can also use peppermint or other oils to give the dough a different smell. Be careful that these enticing smells don't tempt the child to eat it though.
Mix all of the ingredients in a large pan and heat it over medium heat.
Stir constantly until the dough feels like stiff, smooth, mashed potatoes. At this point, take it off the stove. Once it has cooled enough, knead it until it is blended smoothly.
Store the dough in an airtight container

8 oz plain flour
4 oz salt
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 tablespoon oil 1/2 pint of water
food colouring of your choice.
Put the flour, salt, cream of tartar and oil in to a saucepan
Add the food colouring to the water
Add the liquid gradually to the ingredients in the saucepan and mix thoroughly to remove lumps.
Put the pan over a medium-low heat and cook, stirring constantly. This is quite hard work! The mixture will be liquid at first and then thicken suddenly.
If it dries out after a while, a small dash of warm water will do the trick!

This site has some good recipes!
http://www.teachnet.com/lesson/art/playdough061699.html
I have adapted the classic recipe to make it more interesting by adding essential oils- it's important to check the guidelines before using, some aren't suitable for young children!! Adding glitter, or wheat bran etc for texture, use your imagination and it will always be different
