The Internet describes, if you will, the "infrastructure" connection the world's computers... the network of connections running from the hole in your wall to the hole in almost anyone else's wall...
Your service provider gives you access to that network, but what you do with it is up to you... You may use to send email, transfer files, or access the World Wide Web - a rather more specialised entity, but the names are often interchanged, in error.
Since you used the Web to get here, you're already on the Internet.... but only using one application of it.
People will say "My Internet is doing such-and-such", when they are actually referring to their Web browser... these are the same people who will refer to their desktop tower as "my hard drive", or, even more confusingly, "my modem" (took me a while to figure that one out...)

An electronic network of computers that includes nearly every university, government, and research facility in the world. Also included are many commercial sites. It started with four interconnected computers in 1969 and was known as ARPAnet.
Wish you good luck :)
