One advantage may be it gives you originality.
One disadvantage is it maytake away from your posts.

You want a fierce debate on this topic? I don't think so.
Basically if you don't choose anything too ridiculous as an avatar I don't see how it can detract from any sensible post.

There are no significant or functional advantages.
But many avatars are cute. Some are discriptive. They can emphasise one's personality.
I haven't seen any that detract from one's posts.
The ones supplied by Yahoo are generally boring though. But it's probably fun for the user to go through the process of making a Yahoo avatar. And if they have fun doing it, then it's worthwhile.
