They are not useless but they do invoke feelings of passion therefore if you talk about them with people whose views differ thisngs are more likely to get heated.

You are spot on mate. Sports - you pay money to see grown rich people play around a field. Religion - you get brainwashed and made to do silly things. And finally Patriotism - the most idiotic of the lot. I really dont know where to start. Its a load of rubbish, it does not really mean anything except brainwashing. How can anyone love a piece of land that does nothing for anyone in particular. Or love a President or a leader who is just another bum on the face of the earth. Its all beyond me actually.

Because they are ways people with no lives entertain themselves. There is no need for sports, except for those who have either an extreme need to show off, or an outlet for their anger.
Religion is useless as an institution. Personally I think we should each create our own beliefs concerning a God and not mess with other people's beliefs, but most people use religion to justify actions that cannot be justified by law.
Patriotism is worthless. I am here to enjoy my life, and there is nothing in this world that can tell me that I should take up a weapon and face certain death for a country. The ultimate goal of a country is to serve its people, not the other way around.

Hey man...would you just go back to your profile and take a moment to read the questions you have been asking? I mean really.
Hey everyone, this guy is not an asset but someone that seeks to foment discord amongst people.
The rest of us have a difficult enough time staying on point with actual issues (as opposed to Lib and Con bashing which is the most popular activity in this forum) without someone whose sole purpose appears to be the creation of strife.
I can do without another one of these guys...Lib or Con...how about you?

Sport I agree with.
Religion I don't agree with at all.
Patriotism is complicated-it's ok to like your country but it can be taken too far.

Dear Mr happy go lucky. If we had no religion there would be no wars. If we had no sport we would have no morons. If we had no patriotism we would have no Americans.....You have a bloody good point.Think you may be on to something.

I think you mean "why are sport religion patriotism "etc.
This is a good example of a loaded question. You plant the seed and people cultivate your produce. I'm not buying.

My you are young aren't you? It does take maturity to understand that it is not all about the individual. You will never have a sense of belonging if you avoid collective activities.
