They wont ever want to give it up, they may start speaking way late, it could cause dental problems. and if you want to breastfeed they wont take to it after receiving the pacifier it will just confuse them and they will only want bottles.

The big disadvantage is nipple confusing in breastfeeding.
Next comes when they feel the need to suck they should be eating something to grow (nursing/bottle) - not just sucking on nothing. Offer a breast or bottle instead.
And finally it's just not natural. Sucking is a comfort (from instinct, breastfeeding), but it's only half the picture.... the other half is holding the child while the suck (hence breastfeeding or bottle feeding).. so if you are only giving them half of what they need (leaving them alone to just suck at nothing) then they will constantly be feeling unsatisfied and wanting more. It's really not healthy.
add to all of that the teeth and speech issues and it's really a habit you should never start - only use it in emergencies.

I don't think there are any disadvantages to give a baby a paci. It's been proven to reduce sids, and does not ruin the teeth. I think it's only a battle to take it away if you let them have it for too long. My son is 17 months, and I took his away a couple months ago. He never even noticed. He went to sleep, I got rid of all of them and that was that. I personally think that once a baby is walking(unless it's super early) it's time for the paci to go.

Pacifer is fine for under 12 months old, after this age they should only have them when sleeping because they will get too attached to them as a toddler. They only really NEED them as a small baby.

The biggest disadvantage is it is very hard to take it away. I work in a daycare and have several 2yr olds who still use them for nap every day.

i dont think there are any disadvantages to them either.. and they reduce the risk of SIDS. which i think i would rather fight with my daughter by taking it away from her then risk the chance of something happening to her when she is sleeping!
my baby girl is only 6 months old and doesnt really want it as much as she used to..

That they may get too attached and dependent on it. The advantages are that you can ultimatly take it away and it is proven to reduce the risks of SIDS.
