Other than to ask a question to which the reader needs to respond, the answer is no.
You can request a reciept, which may be sent back if the email is opened - but this doesn't prove it has been read.
Note that some systems will send the receipt back when the email passes a certain point on its travels, it might not have got to the intented recipient.
In Outlook, the recipient can elect not to return the receipt.

You can request a read report when you send the email and the recipient has to tick a lil box when they read the mail.

You cannot check if the recipient has read the email but you can check that it has left your SMTP server by checking if there is anything in the OutBox. If the OutBox is empty, then it has been sent.
There is no gurantee that the email will arrive as they can become lost but usually do arrive.

If you use Outlook, click on the option tab and tick the delivery box and/or read box. You will get a reply when the email is delivered and read

Phone your mate and go "Hey, get me email?".
By the way, it's email, or if you are gonna be real old fashioned e-mail, not e,mail.
