You get 5 points for a try, if a conversion is successful another 2 points are added. You also get 3 points for a successful penalty kick or drop-goal.

A Penalty try still has to be converted for the extra 2 points. But as the award is underneath the middle of the posts, there are not many people who would miss such an easy score.

but it's weird because a penalty conversion is worth 3 points

you get 5 points for the try and you
also have a shot at kicking the ball over and trough the poles which, would give you a furhter 2 points.
total for try = 5
conversion = 2
however if you are unsuccessful with the conversion you only get the 5 points for the try added to your total.
