I recently started learning a flogging molly song(black friday rule) which is quite a bit faster than anything Ive played before. Im playing the chords on an acoustic and using a heavy pick(I was breaking too many mediums). When I play it I can rarely make it through more than one and a half verses with out losing my pick.

Ive tried holding it tighter but it gets caught up in the strings. Then I tried holding it more loosely but I ended up losing it faster.

Is there something Im doing wrong? How can I stop loosing my pick?

Its true that I may be strumming too hard, but thats the way the song is played.

also, I only have one medium pick left and once its gone Im out. This is because Im broke and my car needs a new battery, so I have no way to get to the nearest music store(two two towns over). So Ive been a little wary about using it since it may be a month until I can get another.

There are picks that are shaped to go around your thumb, but they end up at a weird angle. You may just not be used to the heavy pick, either go back to the medium but be more gentle, or try to play the song with a heavy pick slowly, then gradually pick up the pace.

Use Snarling Dogs brand Brain Picks. They have little bumps where you hold on to them and I've never dropped one. They're easily found at your local Guitar Center or other guitar store.

Consider gluing a small round piece of coarse sandpaper to each side of your straight pick. In most events, your pick will stay put.

you are strumming too hard. most acoustic players play with a medium or thin pick. your playing guitar, not trying to karate chop through cement.
