Because if it was fired at any other time it wouldn't be the 1o'clock gun, would it?!

It originally started in order to let the passing by ships know what time it is. Every time they heard teh shot they will set their chronometers to the right time [this was obviously before there were any clocks or wrist watches]. The shot is still fired to this day even though it is no longer necessary, for the reason of keeping the tradition alive.

Ok, so lets say they fire it every 15 minutes throughout the day.
Why would they do that ?
Hopefully, they wouldn't be using blank ammo and using the gun to hit tourists on Princes street.

its called the 1oclock gun, there is a clue, if they fired it at 1am there would more than likely be a few complaints
