I don't trust alot of them. AOL is the one I trust the least. I don't really give a **** if they are looking at my files or whatever. I just don't like it when people do it without your permission. These companies have no right to your personal info. And those who do so should be hit with criminal charges accordingly. If I remember right: AOL has already been busted for this once. I mean if you want to look at file systems why not ask first? You would be very suprised about what people would say!

At best the ISP could watch the sites you go to and log them, but considering all the other users they have it would take a large amount of overhead just to watch a few users traffic. As far as getting the files from your PC, i highly doubt it, this would be a breach of the Computer Fraud and Abuse act, and would come with grave consequences to an ISP. Typically its difficult to hack into XP systems which would be required for them to see your files, and usually not worth the ISP's time.

With broadband connections you are behind a NAT system so direct access to your PC is even more difficult.

There is the possibility of placing a backdoor in an ISP's application if they require u use special software to connect to them but this breaches the act. If your especially paranoid you could install a Firewall on your PC and monitor the traffic coming in and out.

there is always the chance that someone working at an ISP is acting alone and stealing PII. I don't think an entire ISP would steal PII... someone working there who thought it was unethical would have leaked it.
