i got into a debated with my boyfriend about whether or not Jim Carey is the kind of actor that can be funny, but he can play a very serious role. Like how do you go from Ace Ventura to The number 23. I know there are several actors that started off as comics and ended up playing very serious dramatic roles. Like Tom Hanks.....He went from SNL to philadelphia. He can do it...but can Jim Carey? Or is it gonna be too much pressure on him. Whenit comes to a movie, does the fate of the movie lie on the actors, the writers, or the directors?

I think he's better sticking to the funny roles. He did do good in The Truman Show, which was fairly serious. I don't consider Bruce Almighty a serious role at all.

But as he grows older, I'm sure he wants to move away from roles like Ace Ventura.

I know Jim Carrey is a very silly person, and just likes to be that way. My brother acts soooo much like him.

Jim has shown his serious side in other movies, like the Truman Show, Bruce Almighty, etc. I believe he is just a very talented actor who likes to be silly (but can actually turn it off).

A movie's fate lies in all three hands. Even if you have a great script, a great director, the movie can STINK with a crummy actor's performance, and vice versa.

Tom Hanks kind of gradually moved into serious. He was on Bosom Buddies, Bachelor Party, Splash, then he moved into serious roles. He was never as funny in the same style as Jim Carrey. Jim Carrey jumped from In Living Color, The Mask, Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber into The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine, The Majestic, etc. We were used to his always-outlandish-all-the-time style, then he droppped it.
