Well perler beads are awsome and can really be bacicly any size. But you may have to just get a big square (see through) and print out pics of your items and just put beads there!Go to WWW.PERLERBEADS.COM

You could make a penguin out of pipe cleaners. Use a 5 inch piece of black pipe cleaner and twist the top it so there are ears. Then twist the bottom for feet. Now, take a white piece of pipe cleaner that is 6 inches long and make a tiny hook. Hook it between the ears and wrap it around the body, getting looser as you go around. Make another small hook at the bottom of the white pipe cleaner and hook it between the penguins legs. Now, take a 4 inch piece of pipe cleaner and shape it into wings. Hook the ends in between the white that you wrapped around the body. Take a tiny piece of orange and glue it between the ears. Glue googly eyes on.

If you want them puffy you can use pom poms. Buy different sizes for the heads and feet and bodies. Buy wiggly eyes and buy some fun foam for things like beeks and ears and wings. Or just buy the fun foam if you want to make flat things. You can draw on one side and then use the other side to show out. Or you can cut 2 and glue them together. They can be drawn on with marker or you can buy wiggly eyes and add other colored fun foam to them for beeks and ears and stuff. Good luck. Hope this helped. Sounds like fun.

I'd suggest modeling clay. You can find in a variety of colors and it's rather easy to use.

Here are some lessons on making various penguins and a polar bear from polymer clay --mostly from the Kids page at my website-- though you could use other types of clay if you wanted ... these are probably about the size you want, but they can be made any size:

SORRY, THE NEXT 2 APPEAR TO BE GONE NOW**, though Linda Welsh Peterson does have a book or two on making her little figures you might be able to see at a craft store (small books like Design Originals, etc.)
Linda WP's lesson on making a POLAR BEAR with ice skates on mirror pond

cute SEAL on top of terra cotta pot "igloo" ...could be made with polymer clay instead of Model Magic
.... cover pot with clay (see Covering >Terra Cotta) or paint it... make seal from clay
http://www.michaels.com/art/online/projectsheet?pid=c00053

PENGUIN family with igloo .. could make a hollow igloo by covering half of a glass ball or lightbulb with a sheet of white clay, but cut out a U shaped door hole in one side
......(could impress lines in raw clay for snow "bricks," or cover with pearly or iridescent Pearl Ex, or paint with acrylics after baking --possibly adding a bit of glitter)
......remove clay from ball or bulb after baking cooling... make tunnel "door" with thick strip of clay placed as an upside down U in front of door hole

**You may be able to figure out how to shape a POLAR BEAR generally from this drawing:
http://www.yamaha-motor.co.jp/global/entertainment/papercraft/animal-global/bear/img/catch_003.jpg
(basically a tapered log for the body/head, with 4 trunk-like legs... could probably just add 2 black dots for the eyes and add two ears and be able to get the point across)

You might find other winter/Christmas ideas -- and more little sculpts that kids can make-- on these pages:

(...there's also a section on that page called Scenes & Dioramas that you might want to check out)

HTH, and have fun!
