If it hasn't gone off yet. disconnect the positive side of the battery. Leave it off for about two minutes, reconnect it and if it comes back on then it has to be reset by a dealer. If your car has well over 100 thousand miles, your emission codes in the computer need to be updated in your car.

well you have another problem.
if i knew what kind of car you had, or what year you had, i could tell you if its possible to pull the codes without having to take it in... but from what you gave us.....
and for the other posters, it has nothing to do with resetting the check engine light. the fact that the code no longer comes up after changing the part shows that it has to be another problem. the cps code has been cleared.

Your mechanic lied to you because he doesn't know how to reset your engine light.

I don't either.

You could research it on the internet, ask the dealer, or a worst case scenario, you may have to pay the dealer to do it.
