I have an Intel Core Duo on my laptop. I looked up its speed using dxdiag and I found that I had a:

T2400 @ 1.83 GHz (2 CPUs)

My question: Does this mean 1.83GHz for each CPU, or 1.83 GHz total? Thanks in advance.

Dual Core processors, as in the core dou, does not mean you have two individual processor. You have a single processor. It is the way that processor computes that distinguishes it from the single core. A single core process counting from 1-100 will have to count each digit. Thus, the computing rate is slower that the dual cores which will count in multiples of 2's. 2, 4, 6, 8, Here is a second way of looking at this issue. lest suppose you were counting to 100. You will need to count every digit. But, if your brother join in the count, you both will alternate digits. You will count 1 and he 2. You 3 and he 4. Therefore, you will only do 50 calculation to achieve 100. Without your brother you will have to do all 100.

Just because your processor has dual cores does not mean it operates at double the speed. It is important to remember you only have 1 processor, which has 2 cores. That single processor operates at 1.83 GHz.

While it has 2 places to process the information flowing through the computer, many programs require certain information to be processed before other information can be processed.

That being said, don't worry so much about the speed as it can be rather a misnomer.. While it can be helpful to increase the speed going through the CPU, the most important thing to remember is the architecture of the processor is what matters on how fast it can process your programs.

If you are really interested in the benchmarking processors and how fast they can handle a program I recommend checking out

specifically look for their CPU benchmarks.

Hope that helps.
