I work for state government and am thinking of changing agencies, because I'm dissatisfied with my current job. I would have to go to interviews during the day, I'm sure, but I get off at 4:30 and come in at 8:30 making it pretty easy to slip one in before or after work or during a lunch break. The only problem is that my office is pretty casual in my building. People that work on the same project that I do work across the street in another building wear more business attire, but not in my building. I'd look out of place. Should I start dressing up a day or 2 a week so this is established as the norm. I actually tried to do this in the past just because it made me feel better about myself and more professional and I felt really out of place all day. I also don't know how my new boss (part of why I want to leave) would react. Most of the time I'm better dressed than him in a polo and khakis. There is a state career fair I'd like to go to at the end of the month.

You could change at a local department store bathroom or mall if you felt more comfortable. I know the tipping off the other employees thing, when I was interviewing for another position I would stop by the mall and change in the bathroom stall before going to work. I would also make interviews at the end of my day so I would leave work a bit early and then change and go....Good luck I hope you get the new job!

I agree with your plan, and here's what you do. I had a coworker once who was kind of lazy, he would put off doing his laundry and his work outfits would get more and more formal until he was coming to work in slacks and a tie because all of his other clothes were dirty. He just told us straight out (because people would ask him why he was dressed up) that he needed to do his laundry and those were the only clothes he had left. Then he'd wash his clothes and dress normal again for a few weeks.

I would dress up maybe a few days a week. If it makes you feel good who cares about the rest of the office.
