Unfortunatly there is no true answer to this, the best i can do for you is tell you about my son. He is now 2 yrs old and between 16 months and 2 yrs his father was deployed with the military. So he was with me and his grandparents. I would see him cling to his grandpas but crave attention from grandma. He would doll himself up and ask for makeup and perfume when he was with his grandmas, but when he was with his grandpas he would wnat to wrestle around and be very "boy-like". Once his dad came home it didn't change. Now, when left to his own play time he does typical boy things and when he picks out a toy it is a car of something along those lines. So, it is both, but I believe nature will have the upperhand always.

I think it's a combination of both, actually.
