The same reason people of other races do it; jealousy. It seems to have been instilled into African Americans due ti slavery, but it's time for it all to end. Rather than putting each other down, why not learn from one another?

The Willie Lynch letter can explain all that. Since we were slaves, we've been trained to hate eachother in order to seperate us for the benefit of the slavemasters. Even when slavery was abolished, universities like Tuskegee wouldn't accept dark skinned blacks.

This is why.

We've been trained to envy eachother and we can't stand when another black tries to do something better.

It's quite sad but it's the slave mentality we've got get over.

Ummm, I think all humans can fall into this catagory. I guess they are insecure and need someone to belittle to feel big.

Why harp on blacks in America though...is there a specific incident that makes you ponder?
