I'm sure there was some type-casting that affected his career, but basically Hamill was never really a good actor...he just lucked into a sweet role that won him instant stardom. He didn't really have to act much...just REact to what was going on around him. Anyone who was cute and young would have done just as well until the initial fame from the movie died out. Hamill didn't age well, either. Ford just got better with age.

The accident he was in around the time of Empire took him out of classic leading man territory and Harrison Ford had already captured the cocky not classicly handsome territory. Movies have recently been much more about rogues than about classic heroes, which also played to Ford's strengthsmore than Hamill's.

Hamell=bad actor
Ford=awsome actor
and Hamell was in a car accident that badly injured him and scared his face. Also Ford played as Indiana jones before Return of the jedi came out, so that also helped his career before Star Wars was over

He wasn't that great of an actor, really, it was the character that made him famous. But he didn't completely implode, he played the Joker on Batman: The Animated Series, and i think he was in Swat Cats. He was in Jay and Silent Bob strike back.
Harrison Ford played a cool character, he was the Fonzie of Star Wars. It was that and Indiana Jones that he got so popular.

THe character, Luke Skywalker was so popular that no one could see him as anyone else. In other words... He was type cast. I think that might have just been the downfall.

the force was not with young skywalker,,, it was also fortold by yoda that han solo would go on to save the earth and his career as indianna jones
