Yes, I do think that it is possible for nonviolence in even today's world. The leaders of our countries need to have a sit-down meeting and discuss everything rationally--with an independent mediator.
I do not fight--at all. I either flee the scene, or take my lumps--but I will not lower myself to the position of the violent one who is assaulting me. I am very much a pacifist--and that ideal should be taught in school--starting with the youngest of students.
I became this way because mine, as a child, was a violent household. It did not help anyone, it did not settle anything, it only created more problems.

As Jesus said "If your enemy strikes you on your cheek, offer him your other." Pacifism is the name of this particular practice, and many believe in this lifestyle. I'm not Christian, but there is certainly wisdom in those words. Nonviolence as a planet is impossible. It isn't a question of the strong taking from the weak, that has nothing to do with violence. We could be a peaceful society and that would still occur. It is a question of violence, and violence is simply part of some people's nature. If you don't like that answer, its the truth, too bad. One day I hope you can take a psychology class.

Nonviolence is only possible in individual situations. Some people can be calmed and reasoned with. The rest will be dumped on their heads and put in jail.

Having been around horses as a child, I learned not to show fear--that that only escalated the horse's fear and reaction. I taught Kinders for 5 year, and certainly realized that they needed reassurance that I "knew" what I was doing! Later, I remarried a really abusive man, and also realized that fear had to be contained, as that would only egg him on. I maintained a rather neutral, non-aggressive stance, yet held my ground. My assurance made him uncertain, so he took it out on destroying the furniture. I had the good sense to take my little girl and myself out of that marriage and environment!!! I had graduated from HS when Gandhi made his inCREDIBLE victory over the British dominion in '47. His incredible courage, belief and leadership of the Indian people to defy the British, made such an indelible impression upon me--as well as the world!!

there are some isolated social groups that have no vilonce acts recorded, so, yes it is possible, when all the members of the society live after some strict rules and they all are supposed to follow that and to be happy with their rules.
In some cases violence is just the answer to violence.
So you need to see this from different cultural points of view. If what is violence for us, could be something normal to a social group that has different values and criterieas of perception of violence.

Yes for individuals or individual governments/organizations, although it is not always ethically/morally the correct solution
i.e. if you are standing just behind a gunman who is blowing away infants at a daycare center, and he stops to reload --- it would be hard to justify not being violent
or if as a country, your people keep being kidnapped and murdered -- to watch and just issue a general state department warning not to leave your house, would also be irresponsible.

1st question: I don't think so. For that to be reality drastic changes would have to take place.
2nd question: In either case...I would tend to shy away because I don't want to harm other people.
