Sport Lisboa e Benfica (commonly referred to as simply Benfica, S.L. Benfica and in many fan anthems as SLB; pron. IPA [spɔɾ liʒ'boɐ i bɐ̃ĩ'fikɐ]) is an eclectic multisports club based in Lisbon, Portugal, best known for its football team.

The club was formed as a result of a merger in 1908 between Sport Lisboa, founded in 1904, and Grupo Sport Benfica. Also known to its fans by the nickname "Glorioso" (Glorious One), Benfica is, along with Sporting Clube de Portugal and F.C. Porto, one of the "big three" football clubs in Portugal. As a club oriented to multiple sports, Benfica fields teams in basketball, rink hockey, futsal, volleyball, handball, rugby, cycling, athletics, and others. In total, Benfica have won several international titles in these sports, namely: the rink hockey CERS Cup in 1991, three Iberian Cups, one Torneio Ibérico in rugby, and five athletics European Cups.

SL Benfica has the biggest fan base among Portuguese clubs, having also the biggest number of supporters outside of Portugal.[citation needed] Almost every municipality of Portugal has its own Casa do Benfica (House of Benfica), which can also be found in many cities and towns of countries worldwide (Andorra, Angola, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Cape Verde, England, France, Germany, Guinea-Bissau, Luxembourg, Macao, South Africa, Switzerland, and United States)[1]. It is also the biggest club in the world in number of associates (registered paying supporters), with a current (November 2006) number of 160,392, a fact which was attested by the Guinness Book of Records on 10th November 2006.

Sporting Clube de Portugal (pron. IPA: ['spɔɾtĩg 'klub(ɨ) dɨ puɾtu'gaɫ]) or simply Sporting, often known outside Portugal, although erroneously, as Sporting Lisbon (in the past the club has attempted to shed this name, namely through ex-president Sousa Cintra and his staff, in an effort to be known abroad by its true and correct name), was established in 1902 as Sport Club de Belas, which became Campo Grande Sporting Club in 1904, and it took its current name in 1906, Sporting Clube De Portugal and has done so for the past 100 years.

The club foundation was instigated by José Holtreman Roquette (José of Alvalade), with the support in money and land of his grandfather, Alfredo Augusto das Neves Holtreman, Viscount of Alvalade. The Viscount of Alvalade was the first President of Sporting Clube de Portugal.

It is an eclectic sports club based in Lisbon, Portugal, being notably renowned for its football branch, which is its most popular department. Along with F.C. Porto and S.L. Benfica, Sporting is one of the "Big Three" clubs in Portugal. Sporting is also one of the notable clubs in European football

Futebol Clube do Porto (pron. IPA: [futɨ'bɔɫ 'klub(ɨ) du 'poɾtu]) - short: FC Porto or FCP - is a Portuguese sports club best known for its football section. It was founded in the northern city of Porto on September 28, 1893, by wine-salesman António Nicolau de Almeida who had his first contact with the game of foot-ball on one of his trips to England. The club was revived in 1906 by Monteiro da Costa. The club's current football home ground is the Estádio do Dragão which was built as a venue for the Euro 2004 and was inaugurated on November 16, 2003, replacing the 51 year-old Estádio das Antas.

FC Porto is, along with Sporting Clube de Portugal and SL Benfica, one of the "Big Three" clubs in Portugal. The club holds the best international record by a Portuguese team having won the European Cup two times (1987, 2004) as well as the Intercontinental Cup (1988, 2004). In 2003, it brought Portugal's first UEFA Cup. It was the first team since the Liverpool 76-77 squad to win the European Cup after winning the UEFA Cup. As for the internal record, it holds the second best record (behind rivals Benfica). FC Porto played in the Portuguese championship 72 times, playing 1988 games, winning 1287, drawing 369, losing 332, scoring 4427 goals and conceding 1876, having 3204 points as of the end of the 2005-06 season. The club's supporters and players are named portistas but are often called tripeiros (English: bowel eaters). In the past the term Andrades was also used, after a family with this name sponsored the club for several years. However, since the 1980s, it is seen as somewhat derogatory by supporters.

FC Porto is also a leading force in other sports: the handball and basketball teams are regular contenders for the national titles and the roller hockey section is amongst the best in the sport worldwide. The new multi-sport arena near the stadium will be completed soon; in past years the non-professional home grounds were scattered in neighbouring cities (such as Gondomar, Matosinhos and Espinho).

Commercially, the club has several stores called Loja Azul (English: Blue Store) scattered around the city, including two used with official supplier Nike. Since 1994, a merchandising goods fair called Portomania is organized during the pre-season. FC Porto publishes one of the older club-related publications in Europe: a monthly 60-page full-colour magazine called Dragões (Dragons) that has existed since the early 1980s.
