STEP 1: Find a thin-bladed piece of serrated metal. A broken coping saw blade is perfect, if you happen to have one.

STEP 2: Determine which way the key is oriented. You'll want to work from the side with the teeth, not the smooth side.

STEP 3: Slide the serrated blade into the keyhole so that the key and blade are tooth-to-tooth. The teeth on the coping saw should point back toward you, not the door.

STEP 4: Push the blade in far enough for its teeth to grab the key's teeth.

STEP 5: Draw the blade out slowly and smoothly.

This will work and save you lots of money on a locksmith.

I had a similar situation. I ended up taking the lock mechanism out of the door and turning the key slot toward the ground. I banged it on the ground and the broken piece slid out enough that I could grab it with needle-nose pliers. I had lubed it up with WD 40 first and my thought was; if it didn't work, I was half way to replacing the whole freaking thing...

Many keys are non-ferrers and a magnet just wont work.

You need a strong but fine pair if tweezers (like medical ones)
failing that an engineer would drill a small hole in the end of the broken piece and and drive in a self tapping screw to give something to hold on to and pull the piece out.

First try spraying a little bit of WD 40 in the lock & then use a pair of needle nose pliars to remove the key. Try to wiggle the key back & forth as you try pulling it out. If no luck there, you may have to install a new lock.

Put a little dab of superglue on the piece of key you still have.
Push it into the lock until it meets the broken piece, then after leaving it to set (10 seconds or so) pull out both pieces.

Take the lock of and dismantle but beware of the springs because if they ping you need a new lock. It's easy enough if you use common sense.

You could get a locksmith out but it might work out cheaper to fit a new lock.
