I think it helps the Islanders go from not making the playoffs, to losing in the first round.

This is by far the most shocking deal made at the deadline. I don't know what the hell Kevin Lowe was thinking when he made this deal! Ryan Smyth is by far the heart and soul of the Edmonton Oilers. Hell, he is Edmonton Oilers hockey! And the thing is, it was only a measly 200 to 300 thousand dollars difference between the two sides in Edmonton on a long term deal! I would have to say that this deal really does put a damper on the Edmonton Oilers playoff chances now. However, on the flip side, it's a great move for the Islanders because they get a guy who is having a career year offensively, with somewhere around 30 goals and counting, as well as a proven leader as he has captained team Canada at something like 5 World Championships, so they have someone who can help them make the playoffs in the East. But, being from Canada, I can only just shake my head and wonder "why?" at this one. Oh well, maybe Kevin Lowe is hoping that the Islanders can't sign him in the offseason and maybe he can pick him up again as a Free Agent. I just don't know why this happened, but it did and there is nothing that can be done now but to play out the stretch of games (for both the Islanders and the Oilers) and hope for the best for both teams in the playoff hunt.

Let's see the Islanders got a guy for the rest of the season and gave up their top pick in 2003, 2005 and 2007 for him (the two prospects were both former first rounders). Unless they get through two rounds and sign Smyth long term, they got hosed. All they got was some press. Smyth may still be back with Oilers next year and now the Oilers have 3 extra guys from the Isles. Since the Isles aren't likely to win the cup (Yashin is known for being a playoff dog) this was just plain stupid.

If in fact this was the Oilers giving up on the playoff races to develop more depth than I think it was a brilliant move on K. Lowes part. I find it hard to believe you trade your franchise player if you think you can make the playoffs regardless of how much money he is asking for. I think it was obvious that when guys like Forsberg, Guerin, Tkachuk etc where going for first rounders and prospect Lowe realized he could sign Smyth in July and pocket some depth in picks and prospect to make a huge trade come next year. I woudnt be surprised if Smyth resigned with the Oil next year. As for the Islanders being a legitimate contender...no way in hell does this team get thru BUFFALO, OTTAWA, NJ in any round and into the finals.

Good for the Isles, good for the Oilers.
New York was already a strong even strength team and their powerplay just got significantly better. They now have to be a favorite to emerge from the pack and solidify a playoff berth and maybe more. If Dipietro gets hot, The Isles could be the Oilers of 2007.
Edmonton wasn't going anywhere this year and they just added 3 1st rounders to their depth chart for the future. Furthermore, they can still take a run at Smyth in the free agent market this summer.

I think you have sufficient answers for this, so I am going to share a funny anecdote from our NHL-loving friends at ESPN.
A TRADE DEADLINE THAT INCLUDED ACTUAL TRADES: NEAT!
The NHL trade deadline was Tuesday and a league-record 25 trades went down. The biggest saw the Oilers send Ryan Smyth to the Islanders -- a deal which shocked Edmonton fans. Here in the States, the response to the trade was more varied, ranging from shock, to surprise that the NHL also has a trade deadline, and then to the most common reaction: "Hmm. That's an interesting way to spell 'Smith.'"

Lowe should be strung up to a tree and shot.
That was easily the dumbest move he or the Oilers have ever made (including the Gretz trade).
Smyth was the face of the Oil, the pride of the city, and best player on the team.
I am absolutely gutted. I feel like i've been raped of my team, my sport, and of my love for the game.

As a Flames fan and a hater or the Oilers, I love it. It just shows how sad the Oilers organization really is afterall. They won't even put up some more money for their franchise player. I think it's sad of them, but I guess they've been a joke since the early 90's, so it's not surprising. As for him signing with Edmonton in the off-season. I think there's pretty much no chance of that happening. I think secretly, the two sides hate each other.

I just feel sorry for Edmonton they are going down the wrong path now that Smyth is gone. Otherwise good luck to the Islanders and Infinite good luck to Smyth(not that he needs it).

I HATE IT!!!!
He loves edmonton and has done so much for this city. Kevin Lowe is an idiot for not giving him what he wants and I hope he gets fired.
I am hoping Smyth will resign with edmonton in the off season but i'm not going to hold my breath.
I'm absolutly disgusted, dissapointed, ... i could go on but what's the point.
