I have a "Dell OptiPlex GX1 : Intel Pentium III 450MHz" running on Windows 98. And I have no need for it. Is there anything that I can do with it? Can I 'add' parts to my newer computer, make it like a home entertainment system, record tv shows, optimize my newer computer, use the chip in combination to my newer computer, or take the memory for something?

Any and all suggestions are very helpful. Thank You.

that's precisely what I did with my old box. I added an all-in-wonder video capture card and a huge hard drive and turned it into a DVR.

there isn't much in an old computer that will go into a modern one except hard disk and cd/dvd drivers memory and processor and the like are not compatible with modern computers if I were you I'd find it a good home and give it away or maybe donate it to a good cause like a school or something

most of the parts will not work in your new computer, even if they do they will not make any difference, so best idea is just to put an add in the local paper and sell it. and spend the money upgrading your newer computer.

Clean your files off the hard drive and give it to someone with a kid who can't afford a computer, and believe me, there are plenty of those around. Call your local school, or call the school system for an elementary school that is disadvantaged.

You will probably not be able to use any parts in a new system since the architecture has changed many times since then. You could set it up as a spare, or as a small network storage unit. Or...you could send it to me :-)

Wow, there's all sorts of things you could do with it. Keep it as is, gut it, upgrade stuff in it. Me personally, I'd probably go ahead and upgrade stuff in it, you never know when a friend or loved one needs a comp for school or something.

Donate it to charity, they will find use for it. Someone else suggested sending to organizations that are trying to improve computer literacy in third world nations.

Send it to Africa for schools. There are plenty of organisations who help African countries by sending computers etc.

Plus you'll be doing a good deed!

theres a computer recycling charity in my comunity where you bring in your old computer, they fix it up and load current windows on it then give it to a low income family. its sweet and you can feel good that you've helped out people that don't have the means to get a computer. check in your community classifieds.

try installing free operating system on it, like Ubuntu. There's a ton of software available for Ubuntu: it's free and legal.
