I'm sorry to break it to you, but if you don't become involved in things, then it is going to be difficult to make friends. You can try to do it in class, but in involves starting conversations with people, and you admit that you are shy. In a random situation like class, it is not going to be easier to take initiative. However, if you sit around and wait for friends, it is a crap-shoot.

I recommend finding a way to better manage your time. Other people have jobs and do homework, and they still find time to join clubs or get involved in activities. Getting involved with activities that interest you is the BEST way to make friends. It automatically puts you in contact with people with similar interests. It helps you overcome your shyness by putting you in a situation where there is always something to do or talk about. Aside of showing up, you don't even have to start the conversation usually. What are you interested in? Figure it out, and MAKE time for this. Friends don't grow on trees. If you can't make time to join a club or get involved in some other public activity, then how are you going to make time for a friend if you DO find one? Get out there and get involved!

Good luck!

p.s. If you have serious social anxiety, I recommend talking to your doctor about it and setting up an appointment with a therapist or taking some medication. Social anxiety and depression will not make it easier to make friends, and they are CURABLE!!

My advice would be to find someone on your campus that you either cross paths often or something like that. And then go up to them and start a conversation or something like that.

Be yourself, smile, have eye contact, be confident and nothing can go wrong. I know it's hard but, trust me it works!!! Sometimes a good friend could be right infront of you and you just don't know it! Good luck
