My friends told me to visit Utah, Minesota or New Mexico.

They also said try and get to the Great Lakes region.

Can anybody tell me what these places are like, Climate, Scenery, etc

every state has a lot to offer, and every one has their lonely non toursity corners and their populated touristy ones.

the great lakes region is a huge area (minnesota, michigan, wisconsin, illinois, indiana, ohio, new york, ontario) and can range from industrial wasteland to pristeen wilderness with windblown cliffs and remote beaches. if you want the wilder areas i would reccomend the apostle islands in wisconsin or isle royale national park (the least visited national park in the lower 48 states i believe) both in lake superior. Or georgian bay in lake huron.

New Mexico and Utah are two of the states that make up the four corners region (the other two being arizona and colorado) if you are looking for wild desert scenery or native american history, its a great place to check out. I would avoid the grand canyon (ridiculously touristy although if you are willing to work you can get to some pretty spectacular lonely spots) and go to canyonlands national park instead in south east utah.

the 4 corners can be really really hot in summer but really cold at the higher elevations, so its hard to talk about the climate. It is a dersert climate.

The general area of the great lakes has very cold winters and tons of snow (the lakes are so big they create "lake effect snow") but it has warm very pleasant summers.

I live in Northeast Ohio (part of the Great Lakes region). Don't come to Ohio. There's nothing to see except maybe Cleveland which is a day trip maybe. Go to Michigan or Chicago. Lake Michigan is really pretty. Traverse City MI is gorgeous but it is a tourist town. If you're coming in the winter though, you should be ok. Their biggest tourist time is summer during the cherry festival. I don't really know if Portland Oregon is a big touristy place but I would really like to go there myself. Maybe if you end up in the west, you could check that out. The mountains are awesome scenery and there is a lot of culture there.

I have been to Boston and there is a lot of history in the area. Obviously because of the minutemen etc. The John Kennedy Memorial library was stunning and the countryside outside the city is beautiful (i did go in the autumn when the colours are at their most spectacular) it was still warm then but does get hot in the summer.

New Mexico is very dry and hot. The great Lakes are beautiful and windy. They actually have tides.

I live in Maine. If you don'twant well knwon places Maine is great. Portland is the biggest city at abot 60,000 people. There is also Mt Katahdin, the toughest climb east of the Mississippi river.

if you want scenery in minnesota you should visit the north half of the state. the farther south you go in minnesota the flatter it gets..although its not as bad as the dakotas. to see one of the great lakes(superior) go to the north shore of lake superior or just go to duluth. if u want to avoid the humidity and the 90F weather i would come in early june or early september...although july and august are not hot and humid all the time..u just stand a better chance of avoiding that kind of weather if u dont come in those 2 months..the north shore tends to be a little cooler than the rest of the state cause of the lake...minnesota weather is unpredictable

each state has something to offer.
You can go online and look up each state name and it will direct you to a welcome center type site that you can see what the state has to offer and where the best deals are. You can also order a catalog with coupons and places to stay.
