You may have a switch on the side of your laptop that you can turn on and off for your wireless card. The switch could also be in button form, you may have to press some buttons to get the card on and off (like Fn + F5). The wireless card is built in, it varies depending on what brand of laptop you have. To join a wireless network you need to go through the XP wireless utility, it is usually on the bottom right tool bar and looks like a computer with waves coming out of it. Compaq may use a different program to control it, so look for some bars or wireless icons. After you open up your utility you need scan for networks in range, and join the one you are closest too. Wireless networks with a lock require a password, and you will have to get that password from the owner of the network.
A little on the card: All new laptops that have wireless cards built in. If your laptop did not come with a wireless card, you can get a PCMCIA card (the little slot that is 4in X 2in X .25in apx. on the side of your laptop) that will pick up a wireless signal. These cards usually stick out some so they are easy to break if you travel with your laptop a lot.
Hope this helps!

Go to Start >> Control Panel >> Network Connections. When you double click Network Connections it will show you all of the network cards you have installed on your machine. If you have a Wireless card built in, you will see it here. Look under the name of the Wireless Network Adapter and see if it says it is enabled or disabled. If disabled, right click it and select "Enable". If it won't enable this way, there may be a button or switch on the front, side, or back of your laptop that turns you wireless adapter on and off. Many HP's and Compaq's have these. If you can't find anything, get out your owners manual and look to see if it mentions an external switch. If you don't have a manual, go to the manufacturers web site. For Compaq you can type in www.compaq.com and it will redirect you to the Compaq dedicated HP site. Go to support and enter the model number of your laptop and then look for a PDF version of your user manual.
If you don't see a Wirless Network Adaptor under your Network Connections, you will need to buy a USB Wireless Dongle, or PCMCIA Wirless Network Adaptor.

wireless is a standardized technologies. consequently any on the spot router helping your workstation’s on the spot extensive-unfold (a,b,g) could artwork. From what i got here upon from the internet, Compaq Presario R3000 sequence has an *optional* 802.11b or 802.11g on the spot adapter. first confirm you have one. If no longer, then you will ought to purchase an exterior adapter. maximum routers help a minimum of b and g, consequently the two one shouldn’t be a difficulty. LinkSys (a subsidiary of Cisco) makes fantastically solid on the spot routers (i desire to propose Linksys over the different type. WRT54G is an extremely extensive-unfold 802.11g sequence *router* that still helps 802.11b extensive-unfold and custom firmware). Netgear, Belkin , D-hyperlink and Buffalo are another extensive-unfold manufacturers. in case you have already got a modem (a modem is in many circumstances presented by the ISP) then all you like is a on the spot router. A Router with a geared up-in modem may well be slightly high priced.

Sounds like you need a Wireless Card/adaptor for your laptop. Why not call HP @ 877-888-8235 I'm sure they can help. I've owned several Compaq's over the years - they are now with HP.

well does your laptop have a built in wireless card, or usb/pcmcia wireless card??
since if it does there should be software that lets you scan for available wireless networks, so u would choose your ssid the wireless name, enter the passphrase and that should let you connect no problems.
