I've been helping my mother-in-law through the disability benefit process. We received a call from Social Security and they told us that they anticipate an approval and that her application has already passed the preliminary approval process. We received a letter today that mentioned nothing of Disability benefits. It spoke only of Supplemental Security Income? What is the difference. Under disability, she would draw around $1200 a month but what about this Supplemental Security? Would it be about the same?

SSI is what a state feels is a fair amount to offer somebody based of there living situations, That all depends on the individual. And it will be usually ALOT less than SSDI. And the difference is when you collect SSDI that means they usually have considered you permanently disabled, as for SSI you usual will have to keep updating records of the situation and if they feel you don't need it anymore they will discontinue it as for SSDI you get it for life
