It is my understanding that the founding fathers wrote a constitution that recognized that all power belongs to the people and that the constitution as originally written only bestowed 21 of those powers to the federal government.

As a result, the framers created what they hoped would be a system of government that would provide for the greatest opportunity for the greatest number of people.

This was done by recognizing that (A) The purpose of the federal government is not to tax the people for the purpose of "benevolence" (Freely translated: Entitlement Programs) and (B) That the individual has the right and power to exercise his free will, reason and logic in the realm of commerce so as to secure his financial security (thus obviating the need for "benevolence).

Therefore, as an individual (like you or I) begins to create their own job (through working for another or entrepreneurism) wealth is also created.

As time passes, and the individual continues to be successful, they form small companies that eventually, some of them, grow into large companies.

All this interchange is the realm of commerce and business and as long as the federal government (and for the most part the states as well) stay out of the way regarding overly restrictive regulation, the economic life of the nation is seen to improve.

Corporations primarily run corporations. In a free market, they are permitted to do whatever is legal in order to continue to be successful as a company.

When the political class creates legal systems whereby influence can be bought, they are inviting corporations to participate in the activity. The invitation is encouraged through various actions that a "legislator" might take to pass beneficial legislation or tax havens in exchange for campaign donations or votes or both.

The problem isn't that corporations do this. Unions do it to, the biggest culprit amongst them is the NEA. Religious groups do it. Everyone except the individual citizen voter has someone in Washington working the system created by the political class for their benefit.

So the problem is systemic and the cause is power hungry politicians that have formed a new class in America. We have the Upper Class, the Middle Class and the Lower Class. To ensure that the status quo is maintained the new Political Class works very hard to ensure that the system benefits the Political Class, first and formost, those who receive benefit by playing the game second (all it costs really is money to get special treatment in the tax code) and the person that is supposed to be the one representing YOU in all this has sold out leaving you, in most cases without representation.

I hear a lot about "our democratic form of government". Well, the above picture is what democracy has bought us so far and isn't likely to change unless people start seeing that "democracy" is part of the problem, not part of the solution.

This country is most definitely being run by the "political class". We all play our part; the corporations, the lawyers, the special interest groups and even you and I.

The answer to your question is no. That would be the simple answer, but I thought some might appreciate why I feel the answer is no.

To a great extent, yes. I read a book called "Who Rules America?" back in the late 1960s-the premise of the book was that insurance companies and drug companies used their money and clout to influence legislation. When the Medicare Drug Benefit bill was crafted, the Republicans shut out Democrats and invited the drug/insurance company lobbyists in to help create the bill. Looks like things haven't changed much since the 60s, except that the corporations have become more obvious and blatant in their involvement.

Yes, and it always has been.

They don't care which party is in power as both are in their pockets

If they want something done they just buy the votes they need to get something passed
