I am a huge fan of the NJ devils and while at a game last saturday- I noticed- once again what peculiar faces the goal tender, Martin brodeur makes. He sticks out his tounge and scunches up his face like he just ate a lemon. My husband suggested it was maybe because he swets so much with his mask on but the following day, I was was watching another game and saw the same thing. But this time he wasnt on the ice- he was watching the game is the audience with everyone else. Does anyone know if he has a condition or something? I caretainly hope he knows how unbelievably silly he looks

Not to be rude but he doesn't care what he looks like. He makes those faces more than likely because he is in the game. When people get into the game they do all sorts of crazy things. Thus, the whole Michael Jordan tongue thing.

There can be lots of reasons, of course, but one that I have not seen mentioned is possibly pinched nerves. A pinched nerve anywhere in the body often causes a twitch in another area. And face it, athletes have lots of pinched nerves.

ON the ice, when you see a goalie tilting his head side to side, it is often because he is pushing his face mask up with his shoulder pads. Often durng the game your mask will get out of position. It is not always practical to use your hands with two huge gloves on them (let alone in the middle of a play), so by tilting your head, the lower edge of your mask hits your shoulder pads (or chest pad), pushing the mask up higher on your face.

Hey... it works.

You think he makes faces!!! You should watch Nickoli Khabibulan!!! He makes A LOT of really weird faces. You almost think he is having a seizure!! I'm sure it is hot under that mask, and it fits tight. If they get an 'itch' they can't get to it so they scrunch up their face. Who knows. As good as Brodeur is who cares!! :-)

Marty is reputed to be very superstitious, so it possibly has its roots in having done that prior to a significant win (his first cup?) Ya just never know! Mike Richter used to get all wild eyed, and his voice climbed a few octaves (see the video following his 1994 Stanley Cup win. Goalies are supposed to be wacky.

I have never noticed this with him but a few players have nervous facial tics when they are resting in a game. Darrien Hatcher has a serious tic going when he goes to the bench.

He makes those faces in response to all the nagging he hears from his wife because he slept with her sister!

force of habit I guess. Just like ball players grab their crotch out of habit even though it may not itch or need adjustment...LOL
