NOT a lab or a golden. If you have kids they will bite, jump up, and ram your kids around. Also, you need lots of time to run the dog. I would honestly suggest a kitten for a family because I find people with young children or busy lifestyles have no time to care for the dog and a lab or golden needs lots of training, attention, and exercise. Plus, food, vet care etc. is cheaper for a cat. Go to your shelter and save a life.

Cats or small to medium dogs make good family pets. No large dogs. Whatever you get you should get young so it can grow with your family and bond more. Also with grown animals you never know their history. I don't recommend any particular breed. The shelter is a great place to get a pet, they are so greatful to have a loving home. Take the family and spend an afternoon at the shelter. Spend some time with the kittens and the puppies. Take home the one that you all agree you just can't leave behind.

Cats are always awesome family pets, but you want to make sure to pick one that will fit in with the family. Here in Atlanta, they have no cage, no kill shelters specifically for cats, so I would suggest finding one like that and taking your family to find the perfect one. Dogs are good, but for the most part are bred and kind of expensive and the ones in shelters aren't always the greatest because they have been through so much. Cats, after being through rough time, like the idea of finally being loved.

Anyhow, I would suggest a cat or a kitten... just imagine having a fluffy little guy laying on your lap while you are relaxing at night, or one that will play "cat and mouse" with your children. They are just great.

I would suggest an older dog that is not going to be to hyper. I have a 4 year old Carolina bread dog and she is very mellow and does not run around like crazy. She does not need a lot of attention and she is very low maintance. With a small child you don't want a dog that is going to be jelous and take that out on the child.

I would suggest a dog because they are loving and dependent. If you do not have enough time for a dog try a cat. Cats are dependent but are still loving but get attached to one person. If a dog I recommend a lab, German Shepard or a good old mutt from the Pound. Remember that it all depends on the attitude of the animals and your family needs (time, financial, vacation time).

I would get a lab. My aunt has two of them. They were great with her 3 boys when they were little.
