My friend has the same car and has occasionally transported my 20 mos. old son. It is an Evenflo Car Seat, but honestly, it is pretty standard as far as dimensions go. It is very hard (as you already know) to put a child in/out of a 2 door. I hope you can get a 4 door eventually.
There are websites you can go to to look at various carseats and ratings. You may first go to epinions.com for a start.
You may also want to call your local fire department or police station and see who is offering car seat safety checks. They are happy to make an appt with you to have your seta checked and to make sure it is properly and safely set in you car. As a first time Mom, I was kind of clueless when I first installed a carseat. Now I am a pro!! You really want to make sure that whatever seat you use, it is really tightly fastened to your seat. You may even have to get in there yourself and put your knee down on the seat while you pull on the belting with one hand just to pull it as tight as possible.
Good luck. Hope that helped a little bit.

I have a 2000 Honda EX 2 Door Coupe. Unfortunately it is NOT Latch enabled but does have a rear latch for the upper tether where the car speakers sit. I bought the Alpha Omega Convertible Car Seat - Alpine Blue from Babies/Toys R Us and I like it very much. It does nothing to help you get your child into and out of the seat and I find that placing it on the R passenger side rear to give me the best visibility and ease of placement (since the R passenger seat slides forward pretty easily). This is, of course, in the forward facing mode. If you have or are transporting a newborn, the safest will be the back seat middle facing the rear. I'm have not used the above car seat in the rear facing mode as we got it after our son turned one so I cannot specifically comment on that.
Hopefully your model is with the Latch system, but if not, once you get the car seat in place and the belt tightened (using the clip if necessary) its pretty solid.

Oh, wow... I had a 2 dr Mazda when I found out I was pregnant. I couldnt find ANY car seats that would fit "properly"... The laws in Cali say that the handle to the car seat must fit below the back, and it wasnt going to work unless I planned on never having anyone in the passengers seat. Good thing I was planning on getting a second car.

I don't have a civic, but I have a small Ford Focus and one thing to think about if you choose to get a car seat / stroller travel system (which you definitely should) a lot of the strollers are so big that they wouldn't fit in my trunk. Graco's seem to be on the big side. The one we have is made by Chicco and it's style is the Cortina. Babies r Us will let you try the floor model in your car before you buy it.

The best rate overall car seat is the graco snuggle, it has the highest all over rating, as long as the car seat is not one of the bigger ones because of being 2 doors it should be fine anyone you pick hint hint the eddie bauer ones are larger in allover size.
