that was the bicentenial year. we wanted the healing to start, to extend an olive leaf, to bring the country together.

Black History Month was not a bicentennial thing--it was being celebrated long before that.

I remember taking part in an essay contest related to Black History Month when I was in junior high school (middle school to most of those who weren't around in those olden days!)--that was more years ago than I care to think about. :-)

I don't think it started then, I believe it began to get publicity then.
